Divergent is a technology company that has architected, invented, built, and commercialized an end-to-end factory system called the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS) that comprehensively uses machine learning to optimally engineer, additively manufacture, and flexibly assemble complex integrated vehicle structures and subsystems. Products created using DAPS are superior in performance, lower in cost, rapidly customizable to meet mission and customer-specific requirements, faster to market, and scalable on demand to high volume production. Divergent is a qualified Tier 1 supplier to global automotive OEMs, and Divergent is now expanding to support mission critical needs in the Aerospace and Defense sector. Join us to be a part of this transformative journey, where your impact will shape the future of technology and production.
In this role you will be responsible for the design and development of various optical systems on production laser powder bed fusion machines. You will own not only design and integration but also development of calibration processes and procedures which enable the precision and repeatability necessary for scaled production. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable being hands on firing lasers, writing technical documentation, and working cross functionally with software, process, and operations groups to develop test plans and ensure compliance to them.
Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to develop the optical systems on the LPBF machine.
Design and build opto-mechanical systems and test/calibration equipment.
Integrate state of the art high power lasers, scanners and high speed camera solutions both in a hands on and supervisory capacity.
Create CAD and drawing files.
Develop and preform test/calibration/characterization processes and design the necessary equipment.
Train operators on various optical calibration and cleaning methods and processes.
Work closely with the process team to ensure all equipment and processes align with process requirements.
Define and promote a culture of laser safety.
Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in optics, mechanical engineering, physics or related technical field.
2+ years (Opto-Mechanical Engineer) or 5+ years (Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer) of experience in opto-mechanical systems design and development.
Ability to develop processes and train others to follow them.
CAD experience, including GD&T and detailed drawing documentation.
Strong mechanical engineering and physics fundamentals.
Systems-level thinker also able to perform detailed work; has previously delivered complex opto-mechanical systems.
Able to identify gaps, define roadmaps, and negotiate outcomes across teams and departments.
Experience with high power lasers (at least 0.5kW).
Experience designing optics for industrial systems such as semiconductor (i.e. etching), laser cutting, long distance laser communication, etc.
Basic understanding of image and signal processing.
Knowledge of motion control and kinematics.
Experience with design of fluid or thermal systems.
Ability to do system level and component level opto-mechanical tolerancing.
Experience working around optical simulation software (Zemax or Code V).
Hands on experience with alignment/assembly of complex optical systems.
This role is based in our Torrance, CA headquarters.
