About the role:
D-Wave is seeking a highly motivated Quantum Lab Operations Specialist to join our Lab Operations Team and support critical infrastructure for product development and quantum computing research. The job involves maintaining and improving the shared lab space and systems where we are doing the work to push the boundaries of quantum computing, as we strive to demonstrate quantum supremacy.
As a Quantum Lab Operations Specialist, you will become an integral part of our team comprised of dedicated and skilled engineers and technicians. Your contribution will play a crucial role in ensuring the optimal performance of our quantum computers. This position is inherently multi-disciplinary, demanding a blend of technical proficiency and a dedicated commitment to supporting research objectives by ensuring the efficient operation of the laboratory, contributing to the realization of our innovative systems' full potential.
In this role you will have the full support and collective knowledge of the entire company at your disposal. We are looking for an active, hands-on participant who relishes tackling tasks in the lab, as opposed to someone focused solely on administrative duties.
What you'll do:
- Engaging in hands-on work and troubleshooting in our lab environment
- Responsible for conducting regular maintenance on specialized cryogenic equipment
- Enhancing processes and tasks on an ongoing basis, which may include developing specialized tools
- Collecting and managing equipment data to inform service planning
- Collaborating closely with engineering teams to support new product development and integration
- Working closely with researchers to fulfill test requirements
- Providing constructive feedback to engineering teams for enhancing system design, performance, and reliability
- Triage, troubleshooting, escalation, and/or resolution of system support requests
- Implementing and monitoring preventive maintenance schedules for cryogenic systems
- Maintaining and enhancing internal documentation
- Collaborate with facilities team in enhancing the lab layout, optimizing it for efficient workflow and improved accessibility
- Serving as the first line of support for cryogenic issues in the lab within the lab operations team
- Establishing and upholding a systematic arrangement for organizing lab equipment, supplies, and materials, encompassing cryogenic materials and components
- Following and enforcing safety protocols for all operations in the lab
What you'll bring:
- Bachelor's degree in applied sciences, or technical diploma preferred with equivalent education and experience
- Experience working as a lab technician with exceptional hands-on abilities and a safety-conscious mindset
- Familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages and/or LISP
- Familiarity with cryogenic safety protocols, best practices and knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to cryogenic systems
- Previous experience operating or maintaining cryogenic or vacuum equipment
- Understanding of reliability engineering principles for enhancing system robustness
- Proficiency in machine shop/rapid prototyping, including the use of mill, lathe, and hand tools
- Experience with SolidWorks or equivalent modeling software
- Passion for learning, excellent critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to clearly document problems and solutions
- Self-motivated, attention to details, proactive, ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Capability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
Work environment:
- Must be willing to work flexible hours during busy periods
- Physical demands for performing the responsibilities of this role encompass standing, walking, climbing, lifting, and carrying up to 50 lbs throughout an 8-hour workday, with frequent utilization of ladders or work platforms
- After a training period, you might be asked to join one of our on-call teams
- This position may involve occasional travel for field systems’ support
The Canadian national average salary range for this role is $66,400 to $85,000. The disclosed range reflects the average base salary minimum and maximum target for new hires in the position in Canada. The respective salary range for the successful candidate will be adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. Actual compensation within the range is based on factors including but not limited to relevant education, skills, licenses, training and certification, experience, as well as business needs.
In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible to participate in our Annual Incentive Plan (Bonus plan), equity grants and programs, PTO, and a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, STD, LTD, and Travel Insurance.
