Role Overview
We are seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer (SDE-V) to lead the design and implementation of foundational data platform services at ID.me. This role will focus on building and scaling the APIs, data services, and automation that underpin ID.me's evolving data ecosystem—enabling secure, compliant, and self-service access to data across the company.
As a staff engineer on the Data Platform team, you will define the technical vision for how data is collected, governed, and distributed in a modern event-driven architecture. You will lead efforts to automate data governance, retention, and compliance processes, ensuring data reliability and consistency at scale. You'll collaborate closely with infrastructure, compliance, and product engineering teams to build the platform capabilities that power identity verification, analytics, and intelligence use cases.
This role is based out of our Mountain View, CA or McLean, VA offices and requires full-time in-office attendance.
Responsibilities
- Design and own foundational Data Platform APIs that provide secure, standardized, and compliant access to data across ID.me services.
- Architect and evolve event-driven data systems that enable reliable ingestion, processing, and distribution of real-time and batch data.
- Automate data governance, retention, and compliance workflows, embedding guardrails into the developer experience.
- Define patterns and frameworks for data lineage, metadata management, and access control.
- Partner with SRE, Security, and Compliance teams to ensure data systems meet SLAs for reliability, observability, and regulatory standards.
- Lead engineering initiatives that improve developer experience around data discovery, stewardship, and responsible data ownership.
- Mentor engineers across teams, raising the technical bar for distributed systems and platform design.
- Contribute to and advocate for open-source and internal tooling that supports data infrastructure innovation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 3 years in data infrastructure or distributed systems engineering.
- Proficiency in a systems programming language such as Go, Java, Rust, or Python.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and building event-driven systems using technologies such as Kafka, Kinesis, or Pub/Sub.
- Expertise in developing data APIs and platform services that support governance, retention, and compliance automation.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and microservice-based architectures.
- Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm).
- Familiarity with data engineering technologies (e.g., Spark, Flink, Airflow, dbt) and modern data pipeline design patterns.
- Strong understanding of data privacy, security, and regulatory compliance frameworks (e.g., FedRAMP, GDPR, NIST).
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and mentor engineers in best practices for distributed systems.
- Passion for developer experience, clean abstractions, and building scalable, maintainable platform solutions.
