Internship Opportunity In Functional Genomics And Bioinformatics

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated intern to join our Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics research team to support our xenotransplantation program in the field of DNA & RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). As an intern, you will work closely with our scientists to assist with various aspects of sequencing experiments, including experimental setup, laboratory tasks and data analysis. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students interested in genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology & biotechnology to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies in genomics & transcriptomics.

The selected intern will need to report onsite at the Blacksburg, Va office for the entire duration of the program which runs from May through August 2026. United Therapeutics does not provide housing or transportation. A stipend for relocation assistance may be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Internship details:

  • All internships are paid, up to 40 hours/week.
  • Interns are responsible for arranging their housing and transportation. A relocation stipend may be provided for non-local candidates. Determinations will be made on a case-by-case basis.
  • 2026 Internship Program Dates: Monday May 18th to Friday August 14th Monday June 1st to Friday August 28th

How you'll contribute:

  • Assist with sample preparation for RNA-Seq experiments, including RNA extraction and quality control.
  • Help in the preparation of libraries for sequencing using standard protocols and tools.
  • DNA and RNA sequencing using Oxford Nanopore's long read sequencing technologies.
  • Contribute to the processing and analysis of DNA and RNA-Seq data, including quality assessment, alignment, and gene expression analysis
  • Prepare Next Gen sequencing-ready libraries using commercially available kits and interface with team members for conducting sequencing.
  • Assist in the validation and interpretation of DNA or RNA-Seq results by utilizing bioinformatics tools, such as alignment and differential expression analysis, with platforms like Oxford Nanopore's EPI2ME or custom programming languages.
  • Maintain accurate lab records and ensure proper documentation of all experimental protocols and data.
  • Assist with other molecular biology techniques as needed, such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, and western blotting.

Minimum requirements:

  • Must be at least a rising sophomore with a major in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology techniques and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with RNA-Seq technologies and next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a plus.
  • Ability to work with bioinformatics outputs (e.g., alignments, expression tables) at a conceptual level and interpret results with guidance from senior scientists.
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools, programming (e.g., R, Python), or data analysis software is a plus but not required.
  • Previous lab experience in an academic or industry environment will be beneficial.
