Joby Equipment Technician
Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by the goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We've designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We're looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a highly skilled, mechanically minded Equipment Technician to support our Powertrain and Electronics team. The ideal candidate is an experienced builder and troubleshooter who enjoys figuring things out, improving designs, and working with both mechanical and electrical systems. In this role, you will assemble mechanical structures, build and wire industrial control panels, plumb pneumatic systems, and help engineers validate and refine custom manufacturing equipment. Work involves hands-on fabrication, electrical wiring, use of machine-shop tools, and interaction with high voltage and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
Responsibilities
- Build manufacturing equipment: assemble mechanical frames (extrusion or welded structures), install mechatronic components, and integrate electrical and pneumatic subsystems using engineering drawings and schematics
- Wire control panels and electrical systems: lay out, route, terminate, and label wiring in a clean, organized manner. Prepare wires, create proper service loops, and follow good industrial wiring practices
- Troubleshoot issues: diagnose mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic problems, and work with engineers to find root causes and propose improvements to assembly methods and designs
- Validate and qualify equipment: assist in functional tests of new equipment, ensuring systems operate safely and as-designed. Provide feedback to improve maintainability and buildability
- Fabricate and modify parts: use machine shop tools including mill, lathe, drill press, saws, and welders to make brackets, fixtures, and made-to-spec parts
- Maintain tools, workspace, and workflow: keep a safe, clean, and organized build area. Help identify, source, and maintain tools and supplies required for efficient builds
- Collaborate and mentor: work closely with other technicians and engineers, share knowledge and train junior technicians
Required
- HS Diploma or GED equivalent
- 6+ years of hands-on experience building manufacturing equipment, industrial equipment assembly, or a similar technical field
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills: ability to think through a system, not just follow steps
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams
- Experience assembling mechanical components, aligning parts, torquing fasteners, and working within standard and metric unit systems
- Proficiency with machine-shop tools (mills, lathes, drill presses, saws) and basic welding
- Experience building or wiring industrial equipment, including motors, transformers, relays, solenoids, valves, and sensors
- Familiarity with electro-pneumatic components and plumbing pneumatic circuits
- Basic electrical diagnostic skills, including the ability to safely use a multimeter to check voltage, continuity, and circuit health
- Ability to work cleanly and systematically when wiring control panels and routing cables
- Comfortable working independently or as part of a team with strong communication and interpersonal skills
Desired
- Experience using CAD software to extract dimensions, understand intent, and make minor design edits
- Background working with aircraft hardware, precision equipment, or high-reliability manufacturing tools
