Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world's toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely worldwide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

The core mission of this role is to design, prototype, and launch groundbreaking AI-powered features and products. You will be at the forefront of creating tools that significantly lower the barrier to entry for geospatial analysis. Your designs will enable a broad and diverse range of users to utilize sophisticated AI capabilities to make informed, critical decisions rapidly.

We are seeking an exceptionally skilled and motivated Senior Product Designer to take ownership of the user experience for our Geospatial Analysis AI assistant features. This is a pivotal role that offers the opportunity to define a disruptive new way for users to interact with and derive insights from Planet's satellite Earth Observation (EO) data.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in designing sophisticated, data-heavy applications, ideally with experience in AI-powered tools or complex data visualization in an enterprise environment. Your work will directly contribute to Planet's mission of providing daily, globally consistent information to make life on Earth more sustainable and secure.

This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from our San Francisco office 3 days per week.

Impact You'll Own:

  • Product Design Ownership: Lead the end-to-end design process (research, conceptualization, wireframing, prototyping, user testing, high-fidelity visual design) for Geospatial AI interfaces
  • Hybrid LLM Interface Design: Focus specifically on designing intuitive and powerful Large Language Model (LLM) interfaces that translate complex user questions into actionable geospatial queries and clear, summarized insights, all without requiring deep pre-existing knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Design for Explainability - define patterns for enabling verification of LLM outputs
  • Strategic Development: Identify opportunities to integrate AI/ML models into Planet's platform, translating technical capabilities into compelling, human-centered product features.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with a cross-functional team of AI researchers, data scientists, product managers, and software engineers to ensure technical feasibility and design excellence.
  • Disruptive Innovation: Champion a vision for how AI can fundamentally change how users interact with satellite imagery, moving beyond traditional map-based tools to conversational, insight-driven experiences.
  • Gather feedback and conducting user interviews in collaboration with product partners
  • Architect the interaction model for Planet's AI-native interface
  • Partner with product management and engineering teams to ensure that the design work meets the highest quality standards
  • Be a part of building our design culture at Planet

What You Bring:

  • 10+ years of professional experience designing complex digital products - especially bringing new products to market
  • Bachelors' degree in design or an equivalent field
  • Expertise in designing for technical, SaaS, or B2B products, collaborating closely with product and engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Experience working with Figma/Adobe and design systems
  • A design portfolio demonstrating examples of professional projects: the results and how you got there
  • Experience conducting usability testing and lightweight user research, synthesizing findings into actionable design improvements
  • End to end design experience: you've taken projects from early ideation to live software, gathered feedback and improved upon previous iterations
  • Experience overcoming design roadblocks and challenges
  • Standard industry design skillset in:
    • UX/UI-Design
    • Interaction Design and rapid prototyping
    • Usability and accessibility
    • Visual design principles
    • User-centricity

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Previous experience with GIS, geospatial data and/or remote sensing, OK if it's only tangential
  • AI native mindset, experience with using AI tools for creative ideation and design/code generation
  • Experience in developing speculative or future-state products, interactions and concept models.
  • Experience solving complex problems where you have made contributions, communicated the problem and taken ownership of existing problems
  • Experience working on teams where growth was a common goal
  • Experience balancing empathy for others when it comes to product design and UX (both end users and stakeholder)

Benefits While Working at Planet:

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision plans
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with a company contribution
  • Generous Paid Time Off in addition to holidays and company-wide days off
  • 16 Weeks of Paid Parental Leave
